I think I might have posted something similar to this before, but the subject is fascinating. And a true paradox. There are so many links to check out within the link below. You can read for days if you're interested!
It seems an oxymoron to us today because Jefferson opposed slavery and yet owned 600+ slaves. He had affairs with slave women, he had children with slave women, he had one woman with whom he was particularly infatuated. So the history of it all is not only interesting, but important to understand.
He inherited the slaves. That's a point. But he also didn't free them (he really couldn't because all slaves were indentured at that point and it wasn't safe for them to be "free"). But yes, it's a good account from the History channel folks, but the accuracy - I don't know. I tend to think the history channel embellishes just a tad.
