What the hell is "medical food"? I heard this term on TV earlier today while making breakfast and listening to Foodcrafting. It was on an advertisement for a product called Digestive Advantage. They actually had the nerve to call this "medical food". Good Lord above. How long have enzymes been around? How long have the "hippies and health nuts" been talking about enzymes and fermented foods and stuff for health? Now, all of a sudden this is medical food, no longer vilified?!!!

Oh, but of course ----- Dr. Oz is behind the scenes because he's selling a book in cahoots with some other clueless doctor.

www.trydigestiveadvantage.com

This is the disclaimer at the bottom of the page when you click on the above link:

"Digestive Advantage Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a Medical Food product that is intended for use by Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferers who are under the supervision of a physician. It is not a cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome nor is it intended to replace any medications that were prescribed by a physician."

But of course -- you should keep taking your regular medications! They're not afraid to write a book of lies, but they're afraid to tell the truth about the fact that the enzymes likely won't work well in conjunction with a "prescribed medication". Probably a medication like Nexium, would be my guess. No way is an enzyme gonna be able to do what it's meant to do in the gut if the "patient" is using a prescription purple pill. This will give more fuel to the notion that enzymes don't work and aren't important.

Talk about insanity.

Too many people, however, listen to the likes of that ridiculous trash doled out by Dr. Oz and his ilk. True insanity.

Too few doctors know anything about real nutrition because they chose to be medical doctors, not nutritionists. At the very least, however, if doctors were believers in the fact that nutrition plays a huge role in health, they would stay in touch with the community of folks (like WAPF, for instance) who ARE foodies and can teach proper eating and food preparation. But there's not payola in that, so the doc's prefer to stick close to the drug companies. Besides, it's easier to write out a script than taking three seconds to explain the concept to their patients. They have no problem referring people to a specialist for a "medical reason" but I guess doctors don't consider true health through nutrition a medical fact.

Here's one doc who's not afraid to mention the foibles of the current system:
QUOTE: "But as Dr. Pauline Chen explains this week in her Doctor and Patient column, many of the nation’s medical schools are failing to provide new doctors with adequate nutrition education."

Read here: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/16/what-doctors-dont-know-about-nutrition/?apage=6

To be very honest, however, I think I'd still rather get my nutrition information from someone who is NOT allopathically educated. Those dudes can't ever seem to get it right, so I'll stick with folks who know.

Uh, yes . . . we certainly do need to reinvent the wheel. Keep reading: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/16/health/16chen.html?_r=1
